Being a complete newbie here. Can someone please tell me which donor would be best for a Dakar donor and why ? Aren't all range rovers and disco's basically the same. Thanks Gary.

all are basicly the same,, they all look the same after the body gets chopped off, the best donor depends on the individual, combinations of early to late dash/seats manual or auto transmission v8 or deisel these are the choices that will have to be looked at,, after finding out how weather proof and comfy a dakar is,i now seem to nearly be using it as a daily car,, so if i could go back and start again i would consider deisel for the economy , maybe,,, your not too far away so your welcome to pop over any time for a bit of a demo,, are you thinking of getting one then ??

Range Rover Classic Land Rover 200 Series Land Rover 300 Series
I would pick up a Land Rover 1994 onwards as they have a much nicer, more moden looking dashboard IMHO and they will take a decent radio.
Think about your doner carefully, You dont want to build a £5000 dakar on an unreliable knackered old landy and have the clutch go on you. I know the Landys last forever but take your time and find a nice one.
MOT failure are ideal as the footwells and boot floors tend to rust big time but the rest will be solid, or one with light cosmetic crash damage where the chassis is still ok.

Still in early stages or thinking about getting one, the missus has it in her head that she would like one its probably going to boil down to weather or not can afford to do a proper job on one or not with the money I've got.

Gary,
I'm working on my Dakar this weekend Saturday and Sunday.
Why don't you come and give me a hand? Then you know what you are letting yourself in for.
As you will have seen I'm in the cleaning up the chassis stage so any help is very very welcome ;D
All you need is your boiler suite! ;D ;D ;D Re the money thing, I think we all go through that process. But once you have your donor, you have a shed load of work to do before you need to order your kit. I stated mine in May and haven't spent a penny until I bought some primer and chassis paint this weekend.

yes you will find that the build and the money will run along side each other at a reasonable pace,, the major bits at the end would be soft top and wheels and tyres,,(i slapped the last bits on a 0% credit card lol ;D)
