how many amps can be run from a cigar lighter socket... thinking of getting a 20 amp gizmo but not sure if i am gonna need to run a power lead from battery or not

It normaly depends on your cars wiring. Check what size fuse is it connected to as this will give you a better idea of its rating. If in any doubt it's best to run a new cable to battery with new 20 amp fuse. or buy a large fire extinguisher

Hey Jay, I'm just doing a Titty an Guilds MOD Electrical course at the min. I still know F all about it. But a cigar lighter has a load of about 60/80 watts so reckon seven to ten amps. The contact area between the plug and socket won't take 20 amps unless you file the centre of the plug flat. still reckon it will get mighty warm though. Might be better to pull a dedicated wire fused 25 amp (through a relay if your gonna switch it). Depends if it's a resistive load i.e. bulb, heater etc., or inductive, motor, solenoid or transformer. Which you would have to fuse up a bit higher to take care of the start load. If it's gonna pull 20 amps then only reckon to get 2 to 3 hrs out of your battery, after that we'll all be bump starting it you push me drive Catch you soon, DjH

has any one seen these jump starters for girls that u plug into ur lighter instead of opening ur bonnet and getting dirty? shurly that carnt be a good?
